2026 Resolutions, But Make Them Fun

| Leiden International Centre

New year, new you! This usually means that you’re feeling motivated and may have written a long list of resolutions for the upcoming months. But let’s be honest, it’s easier said than done. Many are abandoned by February, often leaving us with a little guilt.

The key? Be specific, start small, track your progress and don’t be afraid to ask for help. To make 2026 the year that your resolutions actually stick, here are some great starting points.

1. Meet New People

Do you consider yourself shy or reserved? Do you want 2026 to be the year you expand your social circle? There are plenty of ways to meet people in interesting ways and environments. You can explore different international social groups to find the perfect fit for you or if you’re looking for a more diverse and casual option, join one of our monthly Meet&Mingles. It is a fun and unique way to meet new people in a relaxed atmosphere.

2. Learn Dutch

Even though you can get by in the Netherlands with just English, learning Dutch opens doors socially and professionally while making the integration process much easier. You have plenty of options to get started, from language courses to services that can help you along the way. If you’re on a budget, check out the free ways to practice Dutch such as local language cafés or YouTube videos.

3. Become More Active

If your resolutions are to get moving but the gym isn’t your thing, don’t worry. Try a fun activity like Walking & Talking or take the routes around Leiden where you can walk, run or cycle while discovering the city and getting to know the region. By combining exercise with exploration, you can enjoy being active without it feeling like a chore, making it easier to stick to your goals.

4. Start Volunteering

Giving back to your community is always rewarding. Volunteering in areas that you are passionate about or have a strong interest in makes the experience more meaningful. Whether it’s helping children or supporting local projects there are countless ways to make a positive impact. As a bonus, it looks great on your CV too!

5. Travel More

Travel doesn’t have to mean flying across the world. You can start by exploring neighbouring towns like VoorschotenLeiderdorp or Zoeterwoude to discover local gems, events, museums and markets. These nearby spots offer the perfect chance for a relaxed day trip or a spontaneous weekend adventure close to home.

No matter what your goals are this year, remember that small steps can lead to big changes! Be kind to yourself and celebrate progress along the way. 2026 is about learning and enjoying the journey. So, pick a resolution that excites you and make it your own.

Wishing you a happy, healthy, and inspiring year from Leiden International Centre.
