Giant creatures

This autumn, 12 gigantic little creatures have arrived at the Hortus—for instance, a caterpillar, a snail, or a cockroach, each measuring 2.5 meters in size. Pick up an information booklet or a scavenger hunt card at the entrance and come meet all these giant critters for yourself!

Small creatures like insects, spiders, and snails are vital to a healthy balance in nature. They pollinate flowering plants, clean up organic waste, and help disperse plant seeds. And, of course, every one of these creatures is part of the food web—it’s a world of eat or be eaten!

Armed with an information booklet or a scavenger hunt card, you can explore the Hortus in a whole new way: by searching for "giant" versions of tiny creatures from all over the globe. They even move, so keep an eye out for waving legs or twitching abdomens! You’ll learn about the role each creature plays in the ecosystem—from the praying mantis to the dung beetle. Even the snails in your garden serve an important purpose, and there’s really no need to be afraid of wasps. It’s an educational outing for the whole family.

The "Gigabeestjes" (Giant Critters) exhibition will be on display from October 10 through November 30, 2026.
