Mastering Dutch Office Small Talk

| Taalthuis

Who doesn’t know that slightly awkward moment by the coffee machine… Do you say something about the weather? Ask about the weekend? Or just smile politely
and hope someone else starts?

If you’re living and working in Leiden, chances are you’ve already experienced it. Whether you work at an international company, a university, or one of the many businesses in the Leiden Bio Science Park, small talk at the office is simply part of the deal. From having lunch with colleagues to hearing ‘Heb je een fijn weekend gehad?’ on Monday mornings and ‘Zullen we daar later even op terugkomen?’ in meetings: office life in the Netherlands is full of familiar conversations and typical phrases. And while meetings may be in English, these little in-between moments are often in Dutch. At first, that can feel intimidating. You catch half the conversation, laugh a second too late, and hope nobody asks you a difficult question.

But here’s the good news: you don’t need perfect Dutch to join in. In fact, these small everyday conversations are often the fastest way to build confidence, connect with colleagues, and improve your Dutch naturally.

Start with the classics
Dutch office small talk often starts with the same familiar topics. Safe, simple, and easy to practise. A few examples you’ll hear a lot:
- Hoe was je weekend? = How was your weekend?
- Lekker weertje, hè? = Nice weather, right?
- Druk vandaag? = Busy today?
- Alles goed? = Everything okay?

The weather is always a safe topic in the Netherlands. Especially because there’s always something to say about it. Too much rain? Talk about it. Sunny for five minutes? Definitely talk about it.

Coffee culture is real
The Dutch take coffee seriously. And not just the drinking part. The koffiepauze is often where informal chats happen, weekend plans are discussed, and office gossip travels fastest. Someone might ask: ‘Zin in koffie?’ This is more than a practical question. It’s often an invitation to connect. So even if you don’t drink coffee… say yes once in a while.

Meetings have their own language
Even in international offices, you’ll hear Dutch phrases pop up in meetings. For example:
- Zullen we daar later even op terugkomen? = Shall we come back to that later?
- Goed punt. = Good point.
- Ik ben het ermee eens. = I agree.
- Laten we dit bespreken. = Let’s discuss this.

Understanding these phrases can make meetings feel less overwhelming and help you participate more confidently.

Lunch and borrel: the social moments
Office lunch in the Netherlands may be simpler than you’re used to. Think sandwiches, salad, or leftovers from home. But lunch is often a social moment. And then there’s the borrel: the beloved Dutch after-work drink. This is where colleagues relax, laugh, and chat about anything except deadlines.

If someone asks: ‘Ga je mee naar de borrel?’ Our advice? Go. There may be
bitterballen. Need we say more?

Ready to join the conversation?
Learning Dutch doesn’t just happen in textbooks… Sometimes, it starts with a simple ‘Goedemorgen!’ at the coffee machine, a chat during lunch, or finally
understanding the joke at the borrel.
