Feeling Homesick? You’re Not Alone
When you move to a different country far away from home, it’s only natural to feel a little homesick, especially during these colder and rainy months. This is something that almost every international experiences at some point and it is a completely normal part of adjusting to a new country and culture.
Here we offer a few tips to help you get through homesickness and ways to make your new surroundings feel a little more like home.
Stay in Touch
When you’re feeling homesick, the first instinct is of course to reach out to loved ones back home. This can be a good thing! Schedule regular calls or video chats with friends and families since it can help boost your mood and stay connected. Just remember to find a balance. Stay in touch but also give yourself the space to build your new life.
Accept It Instead of Fighting It
Remember to be kind to yourself. Feeling homesick doesn’t mean you’re weak, it just means that you care deeply. Try not to fight the feelings but instead accept them as being a part of adapting to a new environment. Creative outlets can also be a good tool here. Try picking up journaling, art or even music to help express these emotions.
Build a New Support System
Creating a support system in your new area can make such a difference! Say yes to invitations, join clubs or classes, volunteer or even explore new hobbies. Look for Facebook groups or communities or even come along to events like our monthly Meet&Mingles to connect with other internationals and locals.
Explore Your New Surroundings
It can be tempting to stay indoors when you’re feeling down, and the Dutch weather certainly does not help! But going out can be one of the best ways to make you feel better. Take daily walks outside, even 30 minutes of fresh air during your lunch break can help. Take advantage of the rare chances that the sun might be out, which can help with the shorter days. You can also visit the many cafés, markets and museums around the Leiden region. The more you get used to your surroundings, the more comfortable and at home you start to feel.
Keep Celebrating Holidays
The end of the year is full of festivities, but it can also feel lonely when many friends travel back home to celebrate. If you're staying in Leiden, there are plenty of ways to make the season enjoyable. For example, you could host a dinner to share cultural dishes or a get-together such as a gift exchange with others who are also staying behind. For students, Leiden University often organises Winter Weeks, featuring a range of activities. This is also a perfect time to start creating your own holiday traditions and make new memories!
Take Care of Yourself
Most importantly, take good care of yourself! Keep up a daily routine that works for you. Pick up exercise if you’re able to or cook good meals that remind you of home. Need inspiration? Check out some easy, cosy recipes from the Leiden International Centre team which are perfect for colder months!
Remember that you are not alone and that homesickness does not last forever. Keep doing your best, be patient with yourself and soon your new home will begin to feel like the place where you truly belong.
