Spending the Festive Season the Dutch Way

| Leiden International Centre

As the holiday season approaches, it’s natural to feel a touch of nostalgia, especially when you’re away from home. But don’t worry - we’ve put together some fun ideas to help you celebrate while you’re in the Netherlands!

Just a heads-up, festive traditions here might be a bit different from what you’re used to. For example, December 25th  and 26th (First and Second Christmas Day), and New Year’s Day on January 1st are public holidays. Shops and businesses may have different opening hours during this time, so it’s a good idea to plan ahead. With a little preparation, you can still enjoy a joyful and memorable holiday season abroad!

From Strangers to Friends

Making friends isn’t always easy. Moving to a new country and having to build your support system from scratch can feel a bit like the first day of kindergarten – everything is new, different, and a little scary. Luckily, there are lots of communities on Facebook and other social media platforms that organise meetups and activities, giving you the chance to socialise and make new friends. Don’t be afraid to join in! Check if anyone in the community will be staying in Leiden over the holidays and looking to celebrate together. Reaching out is a great way to meet new people and feel more connected.

Can You Keep a Secret (Santa)?

Secret Santa has grown increasingly popular in recent years, offering a fun and festive way to celebrate by exchanging gifts with friends, colleagues, or even the new group of people you’ve recently met. Why not organise one with them? No need for expensive presents - it’s the thought that counts! Want to add a touch of Dutch tradition? Write a poem for your Secret Santa. In the Netherlands, on Pakjesavond (Sinterklaas evening), gifts are traditionally exchanged along with a personalised poem for the recipient.

Mingle All The Way

Friends are, at the end of the day, the family we choose. And what better way to celebrate that than by hosting a dinner together? Let your creativity flow - be as fancy or as casual as you like. Host a painting or a game night, or simply enjoy the coziness of home and a warm meal. Not sure what to cook? Try preparing traditional dishes from each of your cultures. It is the perfect opportunity to come together, whether you celebrate this time of the year or not, and share your traditions while enjoying each other’s company.

Skate, Sip, and Celebrate!

Join the Winter Wonder Weeks in Leiden! Running until the beginning of January, these festive events have something for everyone. Skate on the famous floating ice rink in the city centre, take part in the Rotary Santa Run or cheer on the participants, or enjoy seasonal food and drinks at the cosy winter markets. During the event there are also live performances, holiday workshops, and fun activities for children, making it a perfect way to soak up the festive spirit. Don’t miss the chance to experience Leiden’s winter magic!

Oliebollen & Cheers

Celebrating the start of a new year can be exciting, it gives you the chance to begin again with fresh resolutions and goals for the year ahead. The Dutch have their fair share of New Year’s traditions, so why not try some yourself? Take part in the New Year’s Dive, enjoy an oliebol, buy an oudejaarslot (a New Year’s lottery ticket), or dance the night away at one of the many parties in the city.
