Digging into Dutch life: gardens, plants and growing your Dutch
As soon as the sun starts shining in the Netherlands, something magical happens: the gardens come alive. Balconies fill with flowers, neighbours start trimming hedges, and garden centres suddenly become the busiest places in town.
For many Dutch people, gardening is more than a hobby. It’s a way to relax, enjoy nature and spend time outside after the long winter months. Even if you don’t have a garden yourself, you’ll quickly notice how important green spaces are in Dutch life. And gardening is also a fun way to learn Dutch!
Learn Dutch through everyday life
When you learn a language through real-life situations, it becomes easier to remember new words and expressions. A trip to the garden centre, a conversation with your neighbour about plants, or even reading seed packets can help you practise your Dutch naturally.
Here are a few useful Dutch gardening verbs to get started:
- planten - to plant
- water geven - to water
- snoeien - to prune
- zaaien - to sow
- groeien - to grow
- oogsten - to harvest
You might also hear Dutch people talking about their moestuin (vegetable garden) or complaining about onkruid (weeds) growing everywhere after a week of rain.
Dutch gardens: small but creative
One thing many internationals notice is that Dutch gardens are often quite small, especially in cities. But people make the most of the space they have! Tiny courtyards, balconies and even windowsills are turned into green little escapes full of herbs, flowers and outdoor lights.
Community gardens are also becoming increasingly popular across the Netherlands. They are a great way to meet people, practise Dutch and feel more connected to your neighbourhood.
Feeling at home starts small
Learning Dutch isn’t only about grammar books or language exercises. Sometimes it starts with small moments: chatting to a neighbour while watering plants, understanding signs at the flower market, or confidently asking for gardening supplies in Dutch.
At Taalthuis, we believe language learning should connect you to everyday Dutch life. Through practical lessons and cultural topics, we help internationals feel more at home in the Netherlands, one conversation at a time.
