As Leiden prepares to celebrate the 450th anniversary of its liberation, we follow them through the days leading up to the festivities and into the heart of the celebration itself. Why do they return year after year, rain or shine, to watch the parade? Why get up before dawn, nursing a hangover, to queue for the traditional herring and white bread? What is it that keeps generations coming back — and what makes this centuries-old festival so deeply rooted in the soul of the city?
