An increasing number of official government procedures may be taken care of online. To do so, a DigiD is required.

The DigiD is a secure means of identifying yourself when you access government services online. If you have a DigiD, then you can file tax returns, apply for rent benefits, register a change of address, make appointments in the hospital, request a remission of municipal taxes, or (in some situations) apply for residence permits online. You can use your DigiD by going to the different government websites, such as the those of the Dutch Tax Authority (Belastingdienst) or the Dutch Immigration Authority (IND), and logging into your account to make the application or appointment. If you ever have any issues with your DigiD itself, you should contact the DigiD helpdesk.

To apply for your DigiD, you will need a Citizen Service Number (Burgerservicenummer - BSN), which you will receive at your registration appointment. 

You can apply for a DigiD for free on the DigiD website, however, you will need to wait 3 working days before applying so that your BSN number has time to register in the system. The online application form has 3 steps and is in English. Make sure to fill out the exact address you registered at with the municipality. After filling out the application, a letter with an activation code will be sent to your home address within 3 business days. After receiving this code, follow the instructions on the letter to activate the app.

Please note: activate your DigiD within 21 days, otherwise you will have to reapply for a DigiD.

Municipalities Voorschoten and Wassenaar offer their non-Dutch speaking European citizens services and e-forms in the English language with their eID.
