If your place of residence changes within the Netherlands, you need to inform your local municipality.

When you move to a new address in the Netherlands, you are required to inform the municipality (gemeente) of your change of address within 5 days of moving. Your new municipality will update your address in the Personal Records Database (BRP). It is important that you notify your municipality about your move because if you don’t do this, you might be fined. Also, if your address is registered incorrectly, it could affect your social benefits and taxes.

If you are moving to a different municipality, you are not required to inform your old municipality. Once you register at your new municipality, they will inform your old one for you.

FAQ about change of address

You need to contact the municipality of your new address. You can usually contact them online (with DigiD), by post or by appointment.
These are the relevant webpages of each municipality in the region:

This differs per situation but in general, the standard is one person per 10m2. If there are too many people registered at your address, your municipality might start an address investigation (adresonderzoek) to see if fraud is being committed. In case you are being investigated, please respond to the notification on time, as this might cause you a fine ranging from € 240 to € 325.

Additionally, the number of people registered at an address may affect your taxes and social benefits. You can check whether your details are registered correctly with the BRP via Mijnoverheid. You will need a DigiD for this.

You must inform the municipality of your change of address sometime between 4 weeks prior to moving and 5 days after moving to your new address. The moving date that you provide will be considered as the day on which your address has changed. Municipalities can impose a fine of up to €325 if you do not inform them on time about the important changes to your personal information.
