Strolling Through the Voorschoten Market
Local charm just outside Leiden!
Whether you're new to the region or have been living here for a while, finding ways to connect with Dutch culture can be both rewarding and refreshing. One of the easiest, and most enjoyable, ways to feel at home is by exploring the local markets that bring communities together. Just outside Leiden, the weekly Voorschoten market offers a perfect opportunity to slow down, discover regional flavours, and experience village life the Dutch way.
Held every Friday from 8:30 to 16:30, the market takes over the Voorstraat, right next to the centuries-old Dorpskerk, in the heart of this charming village. It’s only a short ride from Leiden and a relaxing 10min walk through quiet, leafy streets lined with traditional Dutch homes.
The market is compact but full of character, with a well-curated mix of essentials and treats. Cheese stalls offer everything from creamy young Gouda to sharp, aged varieties. Artisan bread and pastries, including fresh-baked stroopwafels made right on the spot, fill the air with delicious scents. Nearby, fish vendors sell Dutch classics like haring and crispy kibbeling, while buckets of seasonal flowers brighten the street.
The atmosphere is unhurried and welcoming. Vendors happily share stories or recommendations, while regulars greet each other by name. It’s a place where newcomers feel quickly at home.

After browsing the stalls, grab a coffee or sit down for lunch at one of the many terraces next to the market. The air carries the gentle hum of relaxed conversation and the soft clinking of cups. For those of you who prefer to keep things casual and, on the move, fresh sandwiches and hot snacks are available right at the market.
What sets this market apart is its pace. It’s never too crowded, always friendly, and wonderfully walkable. It’s a refreshing alternative to busier markets in Leiden, with a more intimate, village feel.

The village is accessible by bike, train or car and there’s more to Voorschoten than just the market. You can stroll along its peaceful canals to admire charming Dutch architecture. The local park is perfect for a leisurely walk or a picnic, especially nice on a sunny day. Beyond that, the village centre has a handful of cosy cafés and shops where you can pause for a drink or pick up unique local goods. Exploring the side streets lets you uncover small historic buildings and a glimpse of everyday village life, making it a pleasant place to spend a few extra hours before heading back.
