Beyond Registration: Understanding Your Municipality

I receive countless questions from internationals who are unsure how to access services provided by their municipality. Often, they know what they need to do but are not sure which department to contact, where to find the right information, or how to request an official document. 

That's why I wanted to dedicate this month's article to municipalities: the services they provide, the support they offer residents, and the ways you can get involved in your local community. 

I have to admit that before working at Leiden International Centre, I didn't spend much time thinking about what my municipality actually did. Like many people, once I had completed my BSN registration, my dealings with the municipality were fairly limited, apart from the occasional appointment or practical matter. 

However, after spending the last three years working on the BSN Registration Helpdesk at Leiden Municipality, I have gained a much greater appreciation for the wide range of services municipalities provide. While I may never need all of them myself, I have learned that municipalities are often the first place to turn when you need information, support, or services related to everyday life in the Netherlands 

Most people associate municipalities with registration and official paperwork, but their role extends far beyond that. They issue official documents, register important life events, maintain public spaces, organise local services, and work to support the wellbeing of their communities. Much of this work happens behind the scenes, which is perhaps why many of us only realise how much municipalities do when we need their help. As a result, many of the questions I receive from internationals relate to practical municipal services, such as:- 

• How do I register a change of address? 

• What should I do if I am leaving the Netherlands? 

• How do I apply for a parking permit? 

• Where can I request information from the Personal Records Database (BRP)? 

• How do I register a birth certificate or marriage certificate? 

• Who do I contact about waste collection or obtaining a container pass? 

To help answer these questions, I have included links below to these commonly requested services offered by the four municipalities that Leiden International Centre works with: Leiden, Leiderdorp, Voorschoten, and Zoeterwoude. 

More Than Services: Having Your Say 

Municipalities do more than provide services, they also give residents an opportunity to help shape their local community. Through participation platforms, surveys, consultations, and community discussions, residents can share their views on local developments and future plans. 

When I discovered Leiden's participation platform, I signed up straight away. I was curious about plans for my neighbourhood and wanted to contribute my thoughts. While I do not respond to every consultation, I enjoy staying informed about developments in the region and having the opportunity to share my opinion. It also helped me feel more connected to the city in which I live.
