Each summer Leiden celebrates Rembrandt with Rembrandt days, a unique cultural event. During these days the city turns into a living 17th century stage, inviting visitors to step into the world that shaped this famous artist.  

Whether you are a history enthusiast, an art lover, or simply looking for a fun and cultural day out, Rembrandt days is your chance to experience Leiden in a new light. Keep reading to find out what you can expect during this weekend. 

History of Rembrandt

Rembrandt van Rijn was born in Leiden on July 15th 1606. He studied at the Latin School and was trained under Jacob van Swanenburg. Rembrandt gained recognition for his talent, particularly his ability to capture human emotion and light. He would later become one of the most celebrated artists of the Dutch golden age, known for his portraits.  

Living history in the city

Stroll through the city centre and meet actors dressed like in the 17th century. These actors portray merchants artists, and townsfolk bringing Rembrandt's world to life. This is an immersive experience that transforms the streets, inviting you to explore the everyday life of the Golden Age. 

Pop-up stalls and demonstrations

Leiden's creativity spills out onto the streets with open-air markets and performances 

  • Art market at the Kort Galgewater (Saturday 12th July)  
  • Art market at Molen De Put (Sunday 13th July) 
  • Large Historical Theater around the Pieterskerk on both days  

Rembrandt route

Follow in Rembrandt's footsteps on a self-guided walking tour that includes: 

  • His birthplace on Weddesteeg  
  • The Latin School where he studied 
  • Pass through Pieterskerk  
  • And finally stop by his former training site - Young Rembrandt Studio

Tickets – Free during Leiden Rembrandts' days 

Step inside the Young Rembrandt Studio, located in the house where Rembrandt learned the foundations of his craft. Here you can enjoy: 

  • An animated video tour of Rembrandt's early life and development as an artist 
  • A 'Paint like Rembrandt' workshop, where both adults and children can experiment with classical techniques and materials
