From Students to Specialists: Advantages of Hiring International Students

Every year Leiden attracts students from all over the world, many of whom arrive with the intention of staying and working in the Netherlands after graduation. Often it becomes difficult for students to find a job after graduating as many employers hesitate to hire international candidates, particularly those at the start of their careers. Hiring internationals is perceived as too difficult specifically, complicated paperwork and language barriers resulting in employers favouring Dutch candidates over international candidates. Contrary to these beliefs there are more advantages to hiring international students. By better integrating international graduates into the local labour market, Leiden can hold on to the talent it has already invested in and strengthen its future workforce. 

What are the benefits of hiring international students? 

• They understand local culture, workplace norms, and often have basic Dutch language skills. 
• Are trained in critical thinking, research, and in-demand fields.  
• They are already living in the Netherlands, so there are no relocation delays or costs. 
• Lower hiring risk via the orientation year (zoekjaar) meaning no work permit is required at the start of the employment. This makes the process of obtaining a work permit in the future a lot easier. 
• They bring diverse viewpoints, often helping companies innovate and operate in global markets. 
• Opens doors to a larger talent pool with access to more specialised talent.
• Many speak multiple languages which is valuable for international clients and partners. 
• Having studied abroad, they are typically flexible, proactive and quick to learn. 
• Compared to hiring from abroad, processes are often simpler and faster. 
• Students who have built a life in Leiden are more likely to stay if given the opportunity.

Leiden International Centre is actively working to strengthen connections between international students and local employers. Recently we participated in the Bétabanenmarkt, a career event dedicated to connecting science students in Leiden with prospective employers. 

During the event we introduced students to Work in South Holland, a platform that helps international talent find English-speaking job opportunities in cities such as Leiden, The Hague, Rotterdam and Delft. By promoting this platform, we aim to bridge the gap between employers seeking international talent and the talent already present in the region.
