The municipality considers it important that Leiden remains a pleasant and livable city for everyone, and that both first-time buyers and those looking to move up the housing ladder have a chance at an affordable home. That's why new rules came into effect on January 1, 2024. Permits are now required in certain areas to rent out residential space, a reporting point has been established for tenants, and a buyout protection applies throughout Leiden.
