ACCESS Stories
“A story's most important function is to remind us we are not alone in the world." Christine Hennebury
There seems to be a perception that a relocation takes about 3-4 months, the time required to arrive, and (on paper) do the paperwork to start working, school etc., open a bank account, settle into a home, set up utilities, find a Doctor etc.
We, at ACCESS know though, that while there are many firsts in that period – some more challenging than others – until it is the 2nd first time for something, like the start of school, the start of a season, whatever it is – it is all BRAND new. So, looking at the weather alone, it means we consider that any relocation takes at the very least, one full year.
Arriving
That said, even after a year in a place, much remains to be discovered and learnt. Local festivities, celebrations, school or work commemorations, the language, how people communicate, how to navigate ‘systems’ – for many things – and how to actually ‘feel’ settled. Not impossible, but, it takes time – and effort.
For many, the process will go relatively smoothly. Efforts of several Dutch government organisations and institutions certainly help with this, and can make the process at least feel a little less traumatic. Social media too – despite varying degrees of acceptance and problems there – has served as effective ‘yellow pages’ for many looking for answers, or finding connections. But, (there are always those, right?), often little things can trip you up on your way of feeling, and getting settled.
ACCESS has been around since 1986 to answer those questions, to provide referrals to mental health support and offer opportunities for volunteering – meeting people, feeling useful. Now though, we realise, in an increasing digital world what is often missing are ‘personal’ stories. Small glimpses into the lives of people who have relocated which can help those arriving.
So, in July of this year we launched ACCESS Stories, our monthly newsletter of one story, one experience which we hope can encourage people, help them see they are not ‘alone’ and perhaps, share a tip or two not yet considered.
Want to receive these stories, or share them with people you know who may be facing some challenges in getting settled? Be sure to sign up and receive them each month here.
Departing
Before we leave you, just one more point about relocating. Part of a ‘relocation process’ starts before people even arrive in the Netherlands. Arriving here, means leaving somewhere else – this too is part of the relocation process, and is an important consideration to keep in mind when arriving or when you meet someone recently arrived: ‘goodbyes’ are also a challenge to be recovered from, while you are saying ‘hello’ in a new place. Have a question about your new place, the Netherlands? Feel free to check our website for the answer, or contact us if you need more info on helpdesk@access-nl.org.
