Governesses, linen maids, coachmen, servants, cooks, stable hands, gardeners and chauffeurs: in all the centuries, the residents of castles and country houses could not do without a good parade of staff.
On 29 May 2023, Day of the Castle tells the stories of their lives in the service of 'their' lord or lady. The presence of the staff is still felt in many castles today. The staff, like the residents, had their own rooms where they did their work and lived their lives.
However, the stories of these hard-working staff have often disappeared and been forgotten. What were the social relations between the wealthy owners and their staff members? Where did the staff members live and how were the worlds of upstairs and downstairs separated? We tell these stories together with more than a hundred castles and country estates that can be visited on 29 May 2023, Whit Monday.
