A group of musicians from Karakalpakstan tell you great tales of their home country through the power of music.
This trio comes from Karakalpakstan, an autonomous region in Uzbekistan that borders Turkmenistan. The infamous Aral Lake also forms part of this region.
The musicians Gulistan, Salamat, and Pirnazarov are bakshi, or singers of epic tales dating back to the 13th century. The type of music consists of the recitement of stories and poems supported by vocal undertone and overtone techniques. Although it is normally sung alone, the three have come together to bring age-old stories and poems to a wider audience.
