Kemet: Egypt in hip-hop, jazz, soul & funk

An exhibition on music and events related to ancient Egyptian culture.
The Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden is hosting a new exhibition entitled “Kemet: Egypt in hip-hop, jazz, soul & funk” from April 22 to September 3, 2023.
The exhibition explores how ancient Egypt and Nubia have inspired and functioned as a source of strength, knowledge, and inspiration for artists of African descent. The exhibition juxtaposes Egyptian objects with music, music videos, and album covers from artists such as Beyoncé, Rihanna, Miles Davis, Sun Ra, the Sugar Hill Gang, and Earth, Wind & Fire. The exhibition features a multimedia exhibition design by architect Afaina de Jong of AFARAI design studio and is accompanied by a programme of special events, concerts, and lectures.
The exhibition is designed to offer visitors a musical journey through history, exploring themes such as Ancient Egypt as an African Culture, Egyptian Royalty, Ancient Egypt as a Source of Spirituality, and Ancient Egypt as an Inspiration for the Future.
